Creusabro 8000 vs AR500 Steel Targets — What's the Difference?
If you've been shopping for steel shooting targets, you've probably seen AR500 everywhere.
It's the industry standard — and for good reason. But at Alco Target, we build our steel targets
from something better: Creusabro 8000. Here's what that means for you and why it matters.
What Is AR500 Steel?
AR500 is an abrasion-resistant steel with a Brinell hardness rating of 500 HB. It's been the goto material for shooting targets for years because it's hard enough to handle repeated pistol
and rifle impacts without cracking. Most steel targets you'll find online — from Amazon, big box
stores, and general sporting goods retailers — are made from AR500 or similar waterquenched hardened steel.
What Is Creusabro 8000?
Creusabro 8000 is a high-performance, oil-quenched wear and impact resistant steel
engineered for the most demanding industrial applications — mining, earthmoving, cement and
concrete production, and steel recycling. It delivers up to 50% higher wear resistance than
conventional 500 HB water-quenched steels like AR500. In plain terms: Creusabro 8000 is
significantly tougher than what most steel target manufacturers use. And Alco Target is the
only shooting target company that builds with it.
What Makes Creusabro 8000 Different — The TRIP Effect
Here's the key technical difference. AR500 is water-quenched — it reaches its hardness during
the manufacturing process and stays there. Creusabro 8000 is oil-quenched and exhibits a
property called Transformation Induced by Plasticity, or the TRIP Effect. What this means:
when Creusabro 8000 is subjected to repeated impacts — like rounds hitting a steel target plate session after session — the surface of the steel actually undergoes additional hardening.
The TRIP Effect means your Creusabro 8000 target gets tougher with use, not weaker. That's
the opposite of what happens with AR500 over time.
What Does This Mean for a Shooter?
In practical terms, Creusabro 8000 targets last longer and take more abuse before showing
wear. For recreational shooters, that means more range sessions before replacement. For law
enforcement ranges and training facilities running high-round-count sessions daily, it means a
lower total cost of ownership and fewer equipment replacements. For competition clubs setting
up steel stages match after match, it means consistent target performance that holds up over
an entire season. All Alco Target steel plates are 3/8" thick Creusabro 8000 and rated for pistol
calibers and most short-action rifle rounds including .223, .556, .308, and 7.62. Magnum rifle
rounds are handled by our IPSC and larger silhouette plates.
Why Only Alco Target?
Creusabro 8000 is not easy to source or work with. It requires specialized equipment and
expertise to cut and fabricate correctly. Alco Target has been working with high-performance
steel for decades at our Southern California facility, and we build every target by hand right
here in the USA. We're a family-owned company with 41 years in the business — and
Creusabro 8000 is our exclusive. You will not find it from another shooting target manufacturer
